It is estimated that by 2025, 27,000 drones will fly in the Hungarian airspace per day.
Commercial sales of drones in Europe are expected to reach $ 850 million this year, and that amount could reach $ 3 billion by 2025. Hungary wants to be a significant player in this market, due to the rapid spread of technology and the exploitation of its potential. At the beginning of May this year, the Drone Coalition was formed under the leadership of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, of which Széchenyi István University is also the founder. The institution researches and develops the areas of use of drones and the specialization which is required for this.
Ferenc Szauter, head of the Vehicle Industry Research Center at the Széchenyi István University, told the World Economy that drone technology could be of great importance in agriculture, transport, logistics and in the military industry, but for that, an appropriate training should be started.
Incidentally, the university based in Győr already has professional engineering training, which teaches the professional handling of drones on the one hand, and image processing on the other. Approximately 40 people at the institution deal with unmanned aerial vehicles or related technology, from batteries to the development of communication systems. In addition to the developments, the university’s drone technology lab examines the electromagnetic compatibility and immunity of devices, i.e., how much they interfere with their environment, and vice versa. In Hungary, roughly two hundred people in higher education and research institutes are currently researching drones or related technologies.
According to the expert, drones will bring great development first in the field of agriculture and then in the field of logistics. Agricultural companies are already using the new technology, but in a few years every second farm will use it because it makes crop production more efficient than ever.
It is difficult to compete with large drone manufacturers, however, in the case of special drones, manufacturers may appear in Hungary or in the region, which may also play a decisive role at the international level. He added that Hungary can achieve outstanding results in the fields of software, mainly vehicle control and image processing, and it also has great potential in the production of special drones. The head of the research center told us that they work with more than ten professional partners together with the Digital Development Center established at the university, and the institute works for 4-5 industrial customers a year, and the interest is constantly growing.
