SZEviation

The SZEviation drone racing team was founded in the second half of 2021, in October as a new, collaborative project of Digital Development Center (DDC) and Drone Technological Laboratory (DTL) at István Széchenyi University. This team’s main and unique goal is to introduce FPV (First Person View) drone racing to universities, that has never been accomplished before in the Hungarian higher educational scene. First Person View or FPV in this context means that the pilot, who is in charge of controlling the drone is able to see the drones perspective by using FPV glasses, being able to „see with the drone eyes”. The point
of FPV racing is that with the method mentioned above the pilot tries to achieve lower laptimes on the pre-built track (that contains gates, flags and other objects that needs to be avoided), while being faster and more precise in each lap.

The first international drone racing cup was held in 2015, but its popularity was really low, attracting people only from areas where people were interested in the hobby already. For the SZEviation racing team it is top priority to familiarizate the process of drone racing mostly in the Hungarian atmosphere, but in neighboring countries, universities as well and to create or expand a group where college students are able to compete against eachother. Drone racing contains multiple elements, such as the organization of the events, attending as a drone pilot, maintaining – building the drone and to manage the racing team.

In april, 2022. SZEviation held its first university-based drone racing event at the campus, with the help of the DRH (Drone Racing Hungary) group. This event was a part of the Hungarian championship series.

Currently the team is researching a Transmitter – Receiver pair, a special technological solution on the market, validating its data with radiofrequency based measures, but at the same time preparing for future races, cups and events.
